Be better prepared when you buy this shelf

In my 60 years of collecting I have found that this type of shelf is either easy to assemble or it is a bear that requires some tools and patience. The shelf I bought was the last. I have little experience with Honey-Can-Do products and generally they will get the job done but you will sacrifice durability and ease of assembly for cost savings. I was torn between buying this shelf and choosing a brand that I've found makes really great products. I don't mind spending the extra money for quality, but I wasn't sure if a stand like this would actually work in the place I wanted to put it. I don't have a lot of room for stuff I can't use so I decided to buy this rack just in case it ends up in the goodies box like so many other products I've bought that don't have worked. I hoped. Unpacking was relatively easy and assembly was effortless until I got to the last prong of the last shelf. No matter how I pushed or pulled or twisted, the pin didn't go into the hole it was designed for. So I found pliers and tried to bend the pin as it was bent slightly wrong. I used toothless pliers to avoid damaging the plastic coating on the pin. I tried many times but I couldn't get the pin in the hole. I then felt around the tine to see if there was a burr that might prevent it from falling into the hole and that turned out to be a problem. I was looking for a file but first I found a pair of wire cutters so I used these. to cut off the blob of plastic that was preventing the pin from going into the hole. This should have worked but didn't, so I decided to give WD-40 a try since just about anything can be repaired or built with WD-40 and duct tape. The fish oil worked like a champ and I completed the build process. The shelf is now in my kitchen and does exactly what I hoped it would. It's not as strong as most of the more expensive coasters of this type, but it really shouldn't be any stronger than it actually is. So if you're buying this stand, make sure you have pliers, wire cutters (or a file), and WD-40 on hand just in case. And remember, you sacrifice a little quality to save money on this rack. This is not a criticism of Honey-Can-Do products - it's just a fact of life. Your products will do the work, but you may need to put a little more effort into the build process.
