Remanufactured HP 4100 Series ValueToner Ink Cartridges are not an easy or permanent solution, but they can be done.

The item (two packs of remanufactured HP 98 black ink cartridges) was received in good condition with no visible external or internal damage. We removed the empty cartridge 98 from the unit (HP4100 series printers) and followed the normal cartridge replacement procedure, then closed the access door. Immediately the device gave an error that something was wrong with both cartridges (color and black) and you need to remove them and consult the manufacturer's documentation. I removed and replaced both cartridges, after which the printer gave an error message saying something was wrong with the black cartridge and to remove it see the manufacturer's documentation. I removed it, wiped the contacts and inkjet surfaces with alcohol and a soft cloth, then replaced the cartridge and closed the access door. This time the printer gave a message stating that the cartridge was recycled and that the printer's ink level reporting feature is not working. I then printed a copy of the document from my files and it printed without any problems. The printer then called one of HP's famous ink-wasting "alignment" routines, which we performed. All is quiet at the moment on the front of the printer error message. Let's see how it goes from here. The last ValueToner cartridges I bought were remanufactured HP93 cartridges (color) which gave similar errors but then worked perfectly after following the same procedures as outlined here. As long as they work and last a decent amount of time, I don't mind digging into all the crap HP throws at the screen. The ink quality appears to be excellent. Updated 11/30/17. Print quality remains satisfactory with these black ink cartridges, but durability is another matter. Both went away after only a few dozen pages, even when I print in fast/economy mode, which is usually the only printer setting I use, as I don't usually need high-quality black and white page prints - this setting usually produces very good, legible pages. I will not buy these cartridges again in the future.
