Ideal for filtering fine particles. It quickly cleared my water of algae. It can be cut to any size you want. It wears out when you clean it again. I had to do this while treating an algae outbreak. It will also pick up enough dirt to slow the flow of water so it needs to be rinsed out. It doesn't wash off as easily as a foam pre-filter or thicker pad, so keep that in mind. I only use it when I need to get rid of algae and not on a daily basis. It's fine for this purpose. I switched to a sponge pre-filter for everyday use, which is easier to clean and offers better biological filtration.
