Review on Blue NAND 500GB SSD WDS500G2B0A by Ricky Cruise

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The first plate died after 6 months, the second DOA.

I bought a 1TB WD 3D NAND SSD to use in my gaming system for an extra performance boost. I've been using SSDs (namely Samsung) in laptops and other machines for years with no problems. I was warned about WD quality issues in the days of old drives, but the quality has improved a lot in this market, so considering the price, I decided to give this SSD a try. Big mistake. Here's the breakdown: After about 6 months, the computer starts blue screening quite frequently. Windows Update fails to install updates because Windows throws a blue screen every time it tries. Turns out it's not the windows. The drive won't let you write to it anymore! I discovered this once I had my computer on and running (I have Intel Optane memory so SOME entries are cached) and I went to update the game. Every time I had to write the downloaded data to the hard drive, the computer would appear on a blue screen and restart. Wanting to be absolutely sure I didn't do anything wrong, I decided to erase and reinstall the drive. Well, he will be happy to delete, but trying to install Windows from scratch failed. It will not install. There was an error that it could not write to disk. Put my old Platter hard drive back into the system and get back to work with no issues. The warranty replacement process is fairly easy, albeit lengthy, so I hope this isn't your only drive. I got the RMA approved on February 19th and only received the EXTENDED replacement on February 26th. The second disc turned out to be brand new, in the same packaging as the original, just this DOA disc. Every time you try to write to it, it just "disconnects" from the SATA controller. Windows calls this "surprise removed". I've tried a few different SATA cables, tried all the connectors on the motherboard, checked the power supply, turned off LPM, etc. It's fine for me: I tested it by testing a smaller SSD I had from Crucial – this works GREAT with the same cables and connectors. Unfortunately I'm not covered by Revain's return policy so I've requested a refund through WD but I doubt that will happen. Save yourself countless hours and simply opt for the proven Samsung EVO series.
