Wouldn't buy a crate without a guard

If you only have one puppy and have a few towels on the tray until the puppy is stolen into the house, you probably don't need a guard unless you are traveling with one Dog in a cage or you will not cage the puppy when it grows up. That is, if you are going to buy a cage and only intend to use it for a very short time. If you are going to use these cages for anything else, you will need a trellis. The nets are more expensive than the cages themselves, but they greatly expand the range of uses. I use mine for young chickens that are old enough that they can't slip through the cage bars (4 weeks old or so) to keep them clean and dry until they are old enough to go into a coop with older birds and to be free offer. It makes cleaning AMAZINGly easy and keeps the horrendous chicken dust to a minimum. If you raise your young birds indoors, you know what I mean when I say "chicken dust"! A word of warning, unless your cage is a Midwest cage, be very careful of your cage dimensions and mesh size before ordering. Also, not all cages in the Midwest are created equal, if you're just thinking, for example, "oh, that's a 36" cage, the width of the icrats can vary among others (the icrats are a bit narrower), and you need I for that different grids. And crates from different manufacturers fit the Midwest grilles, but are more difficult to assemble. I mean, it's REALLY MORE DIFFICULT to get them to fit, especially when you're talking about very large drawers (small drawers tend to be a lot easier. I've never had one of the right sizes for a drawer size that I couldn't fit, but sometimes you have to start the drawer in a semi-collapsed position to position the grille properly so that the grille can be inserted by lifting the sides where they should be. In these cases a large flat head screwdriver as a lever can help, and a second person goes faster.I think these gates will last forever, and thanks to the plastic coating they are easy on the paws of animals and birds.
