Review on ๐Ÿ  NYOS Quantum 120 Protein Skimmer: High-Performance Solution for 130 Gallon Tanks by Emily Perkins

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Below average skimmer

Save money and look for another skimmer. I stopped using NYOS QUANTUM 120 after only 8 months. It took about 5 weeks for the NYOS to break in and after that it never worked properly. The water level in the skimmer has never risen above the water level in my sump (9 inches). In some cases, the water rose to the bottom of the drip pan but then fell back down (causing the foam that had accumulated - and just before entering the drip pan - to fall back under the skimmer's neck). The controls are terrible; Dialing the number of the skimmer is not as easy as with other skimmers. I had to adjust the controls almost every other day and every time after a water change, every time I turned it off and on again. The drip tray is difficult to remove. The power cord is not attached to the base causing the skimmer to wobble. I replaced the NYOS with a Deltec SCA 1351 skimmer (same price as the NYOS 120) and the difference is day and night! Deltec is powerful, comes pre-assembled, scoops foam in under 24 hours, and pulls consistently thick foam without constant adjustment. Pros: Beautiful looks, solid build, quiet operation Cons: Weak, terrible handling, inconsistent defoaming, long downtime. Period, power cord design, intermittent operation, the collecting cup is difficult to remove, the skimmer is difficult to clean without disassembly.

Pros
  • Great overall performance
Cons
  • Hard to say
