I have high hopes for this gem. I'm starting my 36th year of apprenticeship and I've been buying a new electric sharpener every year for probably 20 years because whatever I had didn't last long. Believe me. I've tried them all. Cheap, expensive and everything in between. Much of the blame lies with the demise of the pencil itself. Anyone who thought they wrapped a pencil in plastic needs a while on remand. My kindergarten children and first graders quickly learned to deal with it. I gave this to an 8th grader to try and he came out of my room smiling! Very quiet. Pencils cannot be sharpened to zero. I wish the plastic clip had some sort of rubber coating to keep it from slipping, but the kids have already learned to put a hand on it to hold it while spinning. I've tried sharpening some colored pencils and they seem fine. I'll be back at the end of this school year and let you know if I buy another sharpener or if this one makes it to second grade! *Back to cool hope: YES! This sharpener finished the school year successfully and I will NOT buy another disappointing sharpener. It's ready and waiting for Year #2! My students sharpened MANY pencils, including crayons, and all survived. I actually have more pencils left over than usual because this sharpener won't let you resharpen. (Now if someone invented a perpetual eraser for the other end.) The quiet bliss of this sharpener was a huge bonus. The crayons caused a few minor jams, but these are very easy to fix. I threw away the useless clip that came with it. I didn't and I didn't have to. Other teachers have noticed that I sharpen my pencils and have added this little gem to their wish list.
