Review on Simplicity 540 Protein Skimmer with Direct Current (DC) Capability by Cynthia Broederdorf

When I bought my Simplicity skimmer I did it because my current one was broken and needed it badly. It came as a surprise and I didn't have much money to spend. My LFS introduced me to their new Simplicity line, although they also showed me my Vertex Alpha series at about double the price. Since my last skimmer was a Vertex and lasted over 5 years I wanted an Alpha but couldn't afford one. I chose Simplicity for cost rather than original desire. After 2+ years I'm so glad I did! I had a problem recently when I was going on vacation and my donor was causing too much calcium carbonate to build up. The buildup in my aquarium has caused everything to be covered in a hard, thick layer of lime, almost cement. My return pump stopped and so did my skimmer. I was able to start the return pump after cycling it on and off repeatedly, but the skimmer wasn't in the bone. I contacted support about an impeller or pump replacement as I didn't have the purchase documentation and knew I was probably out of warranty. They assured me the pump should be fine that they never have any problems with the pump. They sent me a link to a tutorial video of which I only had to watch the first 20 seconds to understand my problem. I managed to disassemble the pump and clean it from carbon deposits. Two years without cleaning and still on the go! Well, it was only then that I realized what a wonderful device this is! The pump is one of the best I've ever used (20+ years in the hobby). The impeller shaft is all-ceramic. The pump can be disassembled without tools! There are plastic screws that hold the parts of the skimmer together, but most of these are thumbscrews. I prefer plastic as you never have to worry about corrosion. After cleaning, everything works as it did on the day of purchase. A few days later and I'm having almost TOO MUCH blowing and skimming! In short, I am a HUGE fan of the Simplicity line and they have made me a regular customer!
