Just use regular Aprilaire filters.
Since I have a dog and a cat in the house, I decided to try the charcoal filter. While it works just as well as regular filters, I hardly noticed any difference in ambient odors. These filters are expensive and need to be replaced more frequently. When it comes time to change the filter, I use the regular one. There just isn't enough difference to make them worthwhile.
