First of all, some fun chemistry. There are two methods to remove small particles from a liquid: decanting and filtering. During decanting, a chemical compound is added that binds to the particles, rendering them insoluble. There are commercially available aquarium products for this purpose and you can have clean water within MINUTES. However, these insoluble components are deposited everywhere in your aquarium (on plants, on gravel, on decorations, on walls) and thus contaminate your aquarium. The second method, filtration, occurs when the particles are retained after passing through the filter. API Bio-Chem was created for this. Aquarium water can become clear in HOURS or DAYS (don't expect the water to clear in minutes). The reason is simple: the Bio-Chem product is inserted into your filter, so you have to wait until a significant amount of water has been filtered. You should check the flow rate of your filter (in Gallons Per Hour - GPH) to estimate how long a significant amount of water will be filtered through the Bio-Chem. Higher GPH levels are good for water quality, but bad for fishing (high GPH means a lot of aquarium water is drawn into the filter, increasing the risk of fish being drawn into the filter). Filtering all aquarium water can take a long time at very low GPH. About this product: This is a HUGE bag and is NOT suitable for small filters like 20 gallon filters and under (as in my case). Second. Item: You should rinse this bag well with tap water and then soak it overnight to remove the black water that comes out when wet. I have a 10 gallon tank and this bag will not fit my filter. So what I did: - I bought a small bag of filter material (3 wide x 8 high) at a local pet store. I opened the pouch and filled (80% - see image) pouches with blackish API Bio-Chem formulation (one pouch makes 2 pouches of media); - I put this bag in the water in the filter (see picture). After 3-4 days the water in the aquarium became clear.
