Pathetic excuse for professional stage gear, but useful with a few adjustments

Just needed a pinch for a guitar amp mic on a fold-out stand. Short summary after two performances: PROS: Black, cheap, compact when folded. CONS: Very low, unstable with anything heavier than the SM57. Unsuitable without modification. This is the cheapest short boom mic stand I could find, so my expectations weren't very high to begin with. At first it appeared to be fairly well built, but after hanging the SM57 from it I found that the threaded male insert pressed into the stem was spinning and I couldn't manage the angle of the mic. A strip of tape temporarily fixed it, but it wasted valuable time checking the sound. I also noticed that when fully extended, this stand barely reaches enough height for the mic of a 50-watt guitar combo on a fold-out stand. It was very difficult at this altitude. A heavier mic (like the '52) would have knocked it out. When I got it home I fixed it once and for all by drilling a cross insert and post tube, screwing it down and securing it. Hammer. It's solid now, but they could have done it with a cheap rolling pin. Build quality is what I'd expect from a sub-$30 stand and it's good enough for everyday use, but I wouldn't recommend it for extended road use. Another modification I made was to fill the legs with sand (insert a piece of wine cork, stick it in the leg, fill in sand, glue on rubber tip). In my opinion this MUST be done if you plan to mount a kick mic on this stand and should be done even if you are using it with a lightweight mic. If it weren't for the free supplement I would appreciate it. Four stars as it offers decent value for money and gets the job done at an affordable price.
