Review on 🍷 Breville Electric Decanter BWD600SIL Sommelier - Brushed Stainless Steel by Kelly Pierce

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Softens young red wines quickly and elegantly

What I really like about Breville is that they take risks. They produce goods for a small part of the population. Of course, that means they have to charge a higher price for the product because they won't be selling it by the ton. This wine decanter is a perfect example of this philosophy. The addition of oxygen to the wine softens the tannins. These are compounds found in the skin of grapes that cause a "sore feeling" in the mouth. White wines are made without skins, so they have far fewer tannins, making this rather ineffective for white wines. You can buy small wine aerators for this and they work. If you haven't tried it yet, you should! Breville is more efficient than them and much more elegant, but it's a great way to try. I compared it to a manual aerator and regular wine. I found this more efficient than a small aerator. It didn't matter with white wine. It was less effective on older reds, probably because aging also reduces tannins. This was very noticeable with younger and cheaper wines. This made them taste softer and much more expensive than they were. It's a bit ironic that such an expensive device works best with inexpensive red drinks from the supermarket, but lo and behold! Heck, it might be worth the cost just for that!
