Review on Universal Laptop Docking Station for Windows and Mac - Plugable USB 3.0 Dual DisplayPort 4K Monitor with Gigabit Ethernet, Audio, and 6 USB Ports by Predrag Holman

Revainrating 4 out of 5

So far my experience has been good as I installed all the prerequisites

I'm a fan of plugable products, I already have one of their graphics adapters and a docking station. I bought this dock based on: my previous positive experience with plug-in products; its 4K capability; and a couple of USB 3 ports. My experience so far has been good once I have met all the requirements. I thought my computer had a USB 3 port, but it doesn't. I tried using it with a USB 2 port and although my computer recognized it as a USB hub, I had problems trying to connect a monitor to it while using my graphics adapter to control another monitor. So I bought a USB 3 PCIe card to add to my computer. Even with that I had problems until I uninstalled two different DisplayLink drivers on my system and then just reinstalled the latest one, which makes me wonder if my problems trying to use the USB 2 port were driver related rather than device related. However, with the USB 3 card and driver issues, I had a total of 4 monitors: a 4K and 2K monitor driven by my computer's graphics card, a 2K monitor driven by my old graphics adapter, and finally one Monitor. 2K is powered by this new docking station. Keep in mind that this dock only has DisplayPort connectors, but luckily I got a free DisplayPort to HDMI adapter with my purchase. On my 4K monitor, which is driven by the PC graphics card, I only got 2560 x 1440. I wasn't sure if it was a limitation of my cable or graphics card, so I decided to see if I could get full 4K could by plugging it into the dock. Turns out I can! Although everything is very small and Windows actually autoscales almost everything to 150% at this resolution, I can go back to the previous setting. Overall, I'm impressed with the dock's video capabilities. Even though my computer is 2011, I haven't noticed any lag or interruption when moving windows from screen to screen. I don't know if this is a feature of the PC itself or the docking station, so your mileage may vary. Also, I tried a few YouTube videos on my 4K monitor in the dock and definitely noticed some instability. On the other hand, I played a locally stored Full HD video on a 4K monitor and it seemed to play fine. I have no idea how the game will play, but I suspect not very well. The only thing I did hit about the dock and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the included USB 3 cable. At only 3ft this severely limits where I can place the dock and means I have more long cables will buy. Given that 6-inch cables can be found at Revain for $6, I think the Plugable could have used a longer cable. They actually come with 2 cables, one for Type A connectors and one for Type C connectors. Since you'll most likely only need one or the other, it would make more sense if they sold 2 different versions with just a longer cable. type A or C). Keep in mind that this is a relative preview after using the dock. in less than a day. If something changes significantly in the future I will try to remember to update it. QUICK UPDATE - I wanted to say something about the USB data transfer speed. Given my new USB 3 card, I wanted to make sure I was getting USB transfer speeds with this dock, and I really do. A quick test transferring some large files showed a transfer rate of 100MB/s, which is what I was expecting.
