I wore this protector on my bed for a little over a year to protect my $1000 pillowcase from accidents with my three 60 lb dogs who are on sleep the bed. It's soft and utterly silent, and has proven itself at several late-night "events". I didn't wash him for the first year as nobody had bed accidents but my dogs are getting older and have had a few accidents in the last few months. In any case, the soft top layer absorbs liquid and prevents it from pooling or moving around the mattress, while the waterproof bottom layer completely prevents urine from entering the mattress. Washing the sheets is a little more difficult than regular sheets, but still surprisingly easy. I run it in the washing machine in warm water on a cold rinse cycle and then move it plush side out in the wash drum and run the spin cycle. This usually gets most of the water out, but if it's still holding water in some spots I rearrange and wring it out again, then toss in the dryer with a couple of bath towels on low heat. I was surprised at how well the waterproof backing held up after 16 months. It stays supple and shows no signs of cracking or peeling like some of the cheaper mattress pads I've used.
