Review on 🐠 Enhance Your Nano Aquarium with the Fluval Nano Aquarium Filter by Brian Foxz

Good filter with some flaws

I bought this filter for a 5 gallon tank to customize. I removed the large black bio-sponge and replaced it with a Seachem matrix. I placed a small bio-sponge on top of the matrix ("downstream") to catch any bacteria that might detach. This keeps the impeller clean longer. I also keep red cherry shrimp. To make these filter shrimp safe I cut a very thin Aquaclear sponge and stuffed it behind the air intake. This gives the added benefit of removing large particles. The filter keeps my water parameters well and the flow can be regulated. However, this filter creates a good flow for my flow qi tank but is not too big to bother my fish. In fact, my guppies love to play in the stream just before the drain. Well, this filter is not a 5 star product. It's great for what it is and what it can do. But it has a few minor flaws. The first disadvantage is in the design itself. The media chamber attaches to the pump by moving it towards it. But the connection isn't entirely reliable; it can be tricky sometimes. If the filter is not fully submerged, air will enter the filter through the gap and may cause noise. The second downside (and the one that almost made me return the filter) is air bubbles. This filter must be completely submerged in water, otherwise it will make a loud grinding noise. I found out that the source is the air bubbles in the filter. I carefully pulled out all the bubbles and the filter worked great! This can be a complication when doing large water changes causing the filter to float. Each time this happens you have to spend a few extra minutes working through all the air bubbles, which can be a problem. I just set the filter low enough that it would only submerge during a huge water change and have had no problems since!
