Review on Riedel Ouverture Wine Glass Set - 12 Count, for Red, White, and Champagne by Chris Kidd

Very nice glasses, the price is right

The 3 types of glasses in this set (4 large red wine magnums, 4 small red or white glasses and 4 champagne glasses) are all beautiful, feel good and look high quality. $80 gets you 12 glasses, that's less than $7 a glass - you can't get any cheaper. They don't look cheap at all. On the contrary they look beautiful, the glass is thin but strong and we agree that the wine taste in these glasses is better than our other (cheaper) glasses. The price is such that you can feel comfortable wearing them as everyday glasses and they can easily be used for more comfortable occasions. Even if the jar breaks, your heart won't break because it's only (less than) $7 a jar. A few notes: The Magnum has a very short stem, which allows the cup to wrap around the vessel instead of holding the stem, which is better for drinking red wine. The magnum has a large opening so you can easily stick your nose in, which greatly enhances the flavor. If you insist on holding the handle, you might not like this magnum because of the short handle, which makes it a bit difficult to grip. Red/White Wine Glass - It looks more like a white wine glass to me, but it can definitely be doubled for a red glass (especially a lighter, less intense red). Champagne glasses: I like larger vessels. It's bold and beautiful. If you prefer a smaller/finer vessel, you may not like these champagne flutes. We bought 1 Pay 8 Get 12 box to see if we like and like them. Actually we just bought 2 more boxes. We are glad that we bought this variety-independent set. We like to drink wine, but we are not connoisseurs and drink many different types. So for us it was perfect. We also entertain quite a bit so having a full set of 12 glasses that can meet all of our wine/champagne needs made more sense than several smaller sets of glasses for different styles. That said, some of Riedel's monovarietal sets look amazing, so we might end up buying a few for special occasions at some point. The packaging is amazing. We won't keep it as we keep jars in cupboards but if you don't have room for them or just want to keep jars in boxes the packaging of this set is really good. All 12 glasses fit in a box with a small handle on top and each of the three different types of glasses comes in a separate collapsible "box" which you can easily remove from the box by pulling out the required number of glasses etc. The The packaging is designed in such a way that you can quickly and easily remove and exchange glasses in the packaging, i.e. without wrapping paper etc.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
