I've been using SPOT for a few years now and would give it about 3 stars out of 5. I've never had to use the panic button so I can't comment on how effective the system is, but they have tons of reviews on the site. My wife loves getting arrival reports straight to her phone and email and that's basically what I'm excited about. My mom is also on the recipient list because she likes to see the different places I go and I can add more people to get updates when I go somewhere with a group. It would be nice if the device could provide a more detailed description of the nature of your emergency, but my usual message is basically "I'm not in danger, but I need someone to pick me up." Track maintenance would be nice, but it costs $50 a year, and that's on top of the $100 required, so I never added it. *** IMPORTANT! ***These devices can give you problems if you are red/green. color blind like me You may not be able to easily distinguish between a green light (normal operation, messages are being sent) and a red light (boot error detected/message not sent successfully). I had this problem with my first unit which broke down after a few years of use. The customer service reps I dealt with were pretty bad at figuring out what was wrong with my unit and what could be done to fix or replace it. I had to buy a new one at full price as the warranty year had already expired.
