The sound comes out of the speaker and it's fun to sing into, but the quality of the item itself is not very good. The lower part is closed with a sticker. The FM radio element doesn't actually broadcast very well and the radio tuning doesn't really work. If you look at other features, don't expect much. However, it does what it was designed to do, which is a Bluetooth speaker and microphone, so the kid will love it. You need to download the karaoke app of your choice which you should be able to find in the app store for your phone or tablet. None are provided. One final note: the triggered voice prompts sound with an Asian accent, which is fine, but the English voice prompt isn't very clear. Another fun children's toy, but don't expect too much.
