Review on πŸ’‡ BaBylissPRO 3000 Tourmaline Titanium Hair Dryer by John Martin

Revainrating 4 out of 5

My favorite dryer, despite the flaws.

Background: I have lots of layers of hair to create a casual head part look. The longest layers are up to my butt. I've never paid much attention to my hair dryers, I've always used the ones that were given to me (I can't tell the exact models. I know one of them was Wella and the other Braun). In the last few years (now in my 20's) I've noticed that my once shiny and naturally healthy hair has become split ends. I wasn't sure if it was because of my hectic lifestyle (and malnutrition), bleaching and coloring my hair, or other reasons. I don't often use hot styling tools. I never straighten because my hair is very straight and I rarely have time to curl it. So the main "hot" item I used was a hair dryer. But in the last 3 years I've started paying more attention to the products I use on my hair (mainly TIGI Bed Head) and my hair is healthy again. actually bought a new hair dryer and just used my tiny travel dryer (where you can switch volts) for about 8 months. I noticed how much worse my hair was getting. They were frizzy, broke easily, split deeply (not just at the end) and in fact it took me an eternity and a half to dry my hair with this tiny travel hair dryer. While it was cheap and perfect for travel, I realized it wasn't the best choice for regular use. So I decided to spend some time buying a new hair dryer. After research, it turned out that the difference between the dryers of the average and expensive price categories is not so big, and the difference in quality between the cheap and middle price categories of dryers is big. And since I only use this dryer at home, it doesn't have to work in a salon (all my hairdressers said they didn't trust BaByliss in their salons because they couldn't "handle the heat" ;) ). That's why I chose BaByliss in the middle price range (I have BaByliss Big Hair Brush and Waver and have a lot of experience with them). I was also interested in tourmaline, which was supposed to emit even more negative ions. PROS: It's warm but not too hot, meaning there's less risk of heat damage (I use the hottest setting for most of the process, cold). Hot shot button at the end to let my hair cool and style). More importantly: DRY FAST. I've seen some reviewers complain that this dryer is "not hot enough" but I think it's warm enough. Also, it's not how hot it is that matters, but how evenly it distributes the air and how evenly it heats in general. And it dries the hair really well. It used to take me 20-30 minutes to dry my hair, with BaByliss Pro I can do it in 8-12 minutes! Although I do stop putting styling products on my hair in between. (And as mentioned above, my hair goes up to my thigh, so 8-12 minutes is amazing!) - It has powerful and smooth airflow. I use the included black nozzle (and I've never had a problem with it falling off like other reviewers said) and it just sends a steady stream of air so evenly exactly where I want to blow it. The air pressure is just perfect. This is LIGHT. I don't really need it for that long, but I appreciate it when my devices don't weigh too much. CONS - BUTTONS. Other reviewers have already mentioned this. The knobs on the handle were an unfortunate design decision. I feel like I don't hold the button very tight because I'm always afraid of accidentally pressing another button. I accidentally turned it off a couple of times or changed the heater settings from hot to warm or cold. This can be a bit annoying, especially since I often change owners because I pre-style my hair with a round brush when I blow-dry it. CABLE/ADAPTER. I don't know if it's a cable, adapter or circuit glitch, but I do know that some reviewers have stated that their BaByliss stopped working after a short period of time. I had some trouble turning it on myself. Since even my cheap tiny travel hair dryer had no problems with outlets, this hair dryer has to be. I ALWAYS follow the suggested "Reset" and "Test" procedures that you must do before using and they always give a positive result. However, sometimes my dryer just won't turn on. I just unplug, try to straighten the cable, plug it back in, hit sleep, and test again. Sometimes I have to do this 2-3 times and so far it hasn't completely stopped working. (However, I've only had it since November 2013 and it's now January 2014). While it's not as bulky as some of my previous hair dryers, it's not as small either. That suits me as I don't plan on traveling with this dryer (I just need every inch of my luggage so I always pack my collapsible travel dryer). - noise level. While I don't find it overly loud, I wouldn't call it quiet. However, I'm a little sensitive to noises and quickly tend to "that's too loud". So I'm not worried about the noise, but I didn't use it and immediately thought "wow, it's exceptionally quiet" because it's quite normal. CONCLUSION I like the result. It dries my hair quickly (which is VERY important to me), doesn't seem to damage my hair too much (of course you should be aware that using a hair dryer is not the healthiest choice for your hair), which means that my hair looks shiny and healthy (no split ends!) Exactly what I needed at a price of $50 which I think is reasonable. I'll admit there are a few flaws and some room for improvement, but I'm so pleased with his work that I don't care if I accidentally knocked him out at times or I didn't have a firm grip on the middle of the handle. What you need or whether you can compromise on the cons depends on personal preference.

Pros
  • High marks for hold and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
