I have many wooden chopping boards and utensils and have never encountered this horrible smell. This board is beautifully finished, there's no doubt about that. And I'm sure that the smell is associated with some special means to preserve the beautiful pattern of the tree and is a sign of high quality. but that's no fun. I was hoping to show it off on this board but the smell was overpowering. Washing didn't help. I had to put it in a cupboard but every time I open that cupboard the smell is so strong and unmistakable. I waited too long to actually remove the plastic from this one or I would have sent it back. Probably have to give, very disappointed.
