It appears that these spikes can extend from the tires like the claws of a wolverine if necessary, as it would otherwise be impossible to explain how simple winter wheels can have such good cross-country performance. At the same time, the spikes have not been lost, and in the last year, I have never replaced a wheel under the extended warranty in the event that the spikes were lost. Of course, I don't drive my Elantra through extremely harsh winter windbreaks, but occasionally there are enough adventures in the city for "survival," and so far I have managed to escape all of the problems on my own.
