Background. My wife and I bought a 4 speed Hampton Bay fan. Due to the electrical configurations of the switches in our home, we wanted a switch that would control both the fan and the lights. Since the fan has 4 speeds, we felt that a 4-speed circuit like this product is necessary. When I went to connect the switch, it dawned on me - no matter how many fan settings, almost any setting switch will work. Essentially, the fan turns on at maximum speed and the switch adjusts the speed with a potentiometer or similar control device depending on the setting chosen. Despite these circumstances, I completed the installation (like any other dual switch). Cons - The quality of the physical slide switch is an issue (as per other product reviews). So far none have broken, although I have a feeling they might break one day as they are small and all plastic. To make matters worse, the fan switch requires considerable force to move from the off to any other position. It took us a few extra seconds to turn the fan on so hopefully it wouldn't break. Update (5 months) - Both still work fine, at least 1 hit per day. We never use the 4th fan speed, it's too slow. I order the 3rd for my office. Update again (almost 3 years) - Everything is good, nothing is broken or worn. My one flaw was exposed.
