It is made of aluminum but feels like cast iron. Except for the weight! I haven't installed it yet, but it seems well done. I use it differently than a square metal post. 3.5" x 3.5" I just wish the bar was a little longer so when using nails or screws it isn't so close to the top splitting the wood or biting into the metal. But you can also use construction glue in the lid, that works too.
