This is a powerful portable air pump. You can leave it on all the time, or charge it and use it unplugged. There are settings for always on, intermittent and off. I'm intermittent. It pumps some air, then turns off for a few seconds, then turns back on. It's quiet except for the vibrating noise when it's on a table. I don't hear any air noise, but I can hear the motor vibrating on my table while it's running. It became white noise after a while, but if you are sensitive to it, it may bother you. I don't think you can get a quiet pump or maybe put it on some sort of insulation if you want it to be quieter. It's small and flat. Almost like a backup battery for phones. It works well and does its job. The fish didn't complain.
