The magnet is not simply glued on!
The magnet is strong enough to hold the opener in place without slipping off. What I particularly like is that the magnet isn't just glued to the back of the opener, it's riveted. (My last one was glued, and of course the glue broke after a few washes.) I've used a bottle opener to open the tops of my cans and it works great: the top pops off every time. I haven't used a can opener yet, but I see no reason why it shouldn't work. It's the right shape and definitely strong enough to get the job done.
