The filters have a peripheral edge that allows them to be separated when inserted into other filters and easily removed after the coffee has been brewed. This helps avoid a mess of coffee grounds everywhere. I fill mine as full as possible, so I often end up with coffee grounds at the top of the coffee pod. I just have to be careful when throwing it away. In terms of cost, I didn't calculate if I would save money by buying filters. I had several packs of loose coffee that I had to use up after purchasing a single cup coffee maker. In general it seems normal. I would buy them again.
