I used them to route a metal pole in my garage to protect my water heater. I don't have a lot of room to put my car in the garage, it fits between a jamb on one end and a door on the other with very little clearance. I was afraid I would hit a post trying to get into the garage. The protectors attached to the bar ensure that my bumper does not get scratched or damaged if I get too close and hit the bar. I've "used" protectors a few times now and am grateful I did. They're thicker than I expected, but I'm not complaining about that. Just make sure the thickness isn't an issue for you and fits where you're placing it. The backs are very sticky and should stick to flat surfaces with no problem. I have some risers on the sides but I put them on a round post so that's to be expected.
