A simple modification makes a good strong variable length hooklink.

My dog is very strong. He chased the animal and broke the retractable leash. I've heard scary stories of people getting caught in these lines and losing their fingers. I tied a set of hand straps along the leash and now use them when walking my dog. At the end I put a loop around my arm and can pull or let go of the leash.
