Review on Aerator IPOUR Premium Pourer Decanter by Amanda Dolan

Design flaws in bar and wine tools

Wine aerators are a great way to enhance flavor. Most are attached to the bottle and also serve to facilitate directional pouring. This one is in a jar. It's basically a plastic cup with six little holes in it. The holes are so small that when wine is poured, the cup fills before the wine has had time to squeeze through the small holes. The extra pressure pushes the wine through the holes, allowing it to move faster than if it were being poured straight. This is what the "Bernoulli effect" on the product side speaks for. What isn't clear is that higher speed means more ventilation. I would think the other way around: you want the wine to drip slower to get air. It's actually an extremely efficient aerator, albeit one that slightly improves the quality of the wine. A more serious design flaw is that the bowl is quite deep (as it should be when pressure is present). So unless you're using a very large wine glass that you want to pour some wine into, you'll need to animate the plastic cup. If you want to pour a full cup of wine, you need to hold the plastic cup in your hand over the glass while pouring the wine from the bottle. This is a recipe for chaos. In short, look for another aerator.
