My dish drawer was a total mess. When I first started looking for a way to organize this, I didn't even know horizontal knife blocks existed. I was very attracted to this knife block for its aesthetics, practicality and price. I managed to fit 11 knives into the block. My chef's knife and bread knife fit in easily. Depending on the width of the handle, a variety of knives can be placed in it. I have a dozen steak knives (although clogged), a longer bread knife, and a few small cheese knives.
