To speed up the process of making blanks for the bowl, I started using taps with a Forstner bit. I use the Irwin Marples brand, however they don't leave clean edges and tarnish quickly on the hardwoods I use. I have a couple of Freud-Forstner serrated bits (as well as a couple of non-serrated bits) and have been using them for many years. These are good bits (sharp out of the box, make clean holes, decent cutting speed, and stay sharp for a while) and they're not overpriced. Blade, but it's a bit harder to sharpen by hand. There are many Forstner Bits with prices all over the map. I imagine a cheaper set would be fine for many purposes, especially where tighter holes are needed.
