Some lathes require drilling

It has the threads specified but does not thread easily into my South Bend lathe with those threads. The reason is that behind the threads, the lathe has a short unthreaded section, and the diameter there is slightly larger than the thread, and there is no corresponding gap in this article. I corrected it with a short drill. Because of the way it's made, it's actually cast iron and not steel. I don't have any equipment to measure the carbon percentage, so I can't say for sure.

Worked as expected. Solid back panel.

Used this back plate to install an ER32 collet on my 9x20 lathe. I had to do some minor machining to attach the insert to my lathe and the chuck to the back plate after it was installed on the lathe. This was to be expected and indeed necessary to achieve an accurate fit. Expect the same when you buy this backplate. The material looks like cast steel, not cast iron, and is well made. Almost there, but not quite.

I purchased this base to mount an ER-32 collet (HHIP 3901-5032 ER-32 collet, 80mm diameter) from the same manufacturer on my two Sherline spindles. Turning and Milling. I was hoping it would fit right into the cartridge, but that's not entirely true. That's partly why I only gave it three stars. The cartridge looks like it is made of high quality stainless steel. But that back panel looks like it's made out of low-grade steel that will rust. It wasn't as blue and shiny as in the photo, but it…
