The bag is quite small and we had to buy a bigger bag for our son who is in 6th grade. It doesn't fit in a three ring binder and a math textbook. I don't think it would have worked for 5th grade either. But the bag itself is beautiful and high quality. This is a good deal for the price. Just be prepared that it's a bit smaller than most backpacks.
