This product doesn't work properly, it doesn't have enough porosity to hold microbes in it, just dirt around it. good construction, solid yes but not for great filtration or tiny microorganism system.

I bought these to run a shatter tank. I put them in a swamp for a couple of weeks so the bacteria could colonize them. When I installed the frag tank and put her in there, the tank worked very quickly and the bacteria in the bottle were not needed. Because of the size, you can put these things literally anywhere.

For the amount of filter media you get here, this is a very good price. This works well in a sump or large canister filter. The only thing not to do is that when rubbing, some small particles break off and form a sand-like material. Make sure you wash up well and you should be good to go.
