20 year old BMW ran poorly with backfires. Installing a new MAF along with a new intake air filter and tightening all the connections greatly improved engine performance. Still not working like new (me neither) but much better. It's difficult to get the new MAF to fit in the old air ducts. Make sure the piping is free of cracks/leaks.

Not good. It never worked right after installing MAF. I bought another one from the same company because they are cheap. I know why it's cheap there. They don't work at all. I had to send the first one back after realizing it was bad. At first it didn't fit. It worked for a week but gave out codes right away. The second didn't work at all. I replaced my MAF sensor on my 2000 BMW 528i as part of my regular service, it fits perfectly and doesn't generate any new trouble codes. It was very easy to install and I couldn't tell if it gave better performance or fuel economy because I also replaced my ignition coils, spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter and O2 sensors so my 2000 runs like a brand for now. This item works great on my 2002 BMW 525i. Most of the time. However, it was installed within a few months. The check engine light comes on twice for no apparent reason. When I scan the codes I get out of range mix errors on both banks. This is almost always a DMRV error. I understand it's a $20 MAF so don't expect miracles. The error is random and doesn't affect handling, it's just a PITA to go to my shop and reset the codes. But I'll wait until it gets worse, then I'll buy VDO.
