They are NOT 100% silica and contain aragonite. I wouldn't use them in a frwshwatwr tank unless you plan on maintaining a pH of 8 or higher.

I like textures over smooth species to allow biofilm to grow on them. As well as being used in filters we also use it in the aquarium as a calcium supplement and its texture is great for biofilm growth.

I like this litter more than big bioballs or even lava rocks because it is more compact for our small pond and our filters. I split my order into 2 mesh bags and love how they can be manipulated into smaller shapes to fit in tight spaces in a variety of filters. However, it is expensive for what it is.
