Runs big but so cute!

I love these boots! They are so cute and just what I was looking for my son. They have a round toe and an inside zip for easy on and off. I ordered size 5 (baby size) and they are really big. He is currently a size 4.5M in Stride Right so I thought a size 5 would fit and a size 4 would be too small. 4 would probably be a perfect fit because it can come straight out of 5. I needed them this week so I didn't change them thinking baby feet are growing so fast they should fit soon. For his photos…

Is R slightly narrower than D?

I couldn't find a 9D to order so I ordered a 9R - I had never heard of "R" before. This is the 4th pair of Hopalong boots I have purchased and all previous sizes were marked with a 'D'. From what I could find online, both "D" and "R" are normal widths. I couldn't find anything about the "D" or "R" sizes directly on Smoky Mountain, which only added to my confusion. I've placed them next to my 8Ds that I have and the R seems a little narrow in the toe box in comparison. . My toddler says they are

"Like Dad! " but order at least one size up

Other reviews mentioned going up a size and I followed the advice. My son just got to a size 6 and the other pair of shoes we have for him, a size 7, is still a bit big, so I followed the recommendation and ordered a size 7.
