Significant gains for a low price

If you're looking to spend Synology big, this and a pair of high-end M.2 SSDs are no problem. Easy to install and configure, they increase speeds significantly, especially when running multiple streaming operations at the same time. I have one on my 8-bay Synology NAS and it has had a huge impact on my media streaming, both at home and on the go via PLEX.

Pros
  • Satisfied so far
Cons
  • Something's wrong

Expensive computer component solution

m.2 support should be built in per MB so you don't have to choose between caching or 10GB networking, which sucks. Adding this feature to Synology drastically increases costs and reduces the range of features. Also, you limit the cache to the amount of RAM you have, so you can't add any size. I'm not happy with this, but what other options do I have? I wish I had a 10GB network and this cache at the same time.

Pros
  • Rugged finish
Cons
  • Scarce manual

What is the difference in streaming movies to Plex customers

We have a large collection of movies and we use Plex as the delivery system for our devices. Watching new and old movies is a popular pastime. We collected over 4500 movies and stored them on a large Synology RAID. We love Synology's performance for our NAS. 2 x 1 TB internal M.2 PCIe NVMe Gen3 x4 SSDs (SSD)

Pros
  • Dope 🔥
Cons
  • Available in black only

Kernel dependent on NICs

I've deployed two of these. Ideal for designing. This is an IDT/Renasas 24 lane PCI switch, part number 89HPES24T6G2, and a Marvel dual port SATA controller on the back panel. This is an 8-lane physical and logical connection with speeds up to PCIe 2.0. Each M.2 slot supports any M-Key SSD as long as they are both SATA or both NVMe. In NVMe mode, this is a 4-lane PCIe slot. In total, it occupies 16 of the 24 lanes, which means that the PCIe switch is never overloaded. Linux automatically…

Pros
  • Large selection

  • Modern

Synology needs to clarify NVMe compatibility

I bought this to speed up my DS1517+. I installed a dual Kingston 240GB NVMe and nah. The tech support representative said that this is a fairly common complaint. If you're using this to add NVMe SSD caching to the DS1517+ like I did, take your time. While I knew the previous card would only support SATA speeds, it was great to see that the M2D18 could take advantage of the much faster NVMe protocol. So like an idiot I buy a card and 2 NVMe drives to make it work. Only to find out that this…

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Waiting too long

Excellent acceleration for Synology

This has had a very positive impact on the performance of my Synology configured with SHR2 5 drives and using 2nVME as read/write cache for a BTRFS volume. Is it worth the money, well I would say it totally depends on your usage, if you have a small office with thousands of files or photos then yes it is possible that over time if they are cached will see a noticeable improvement, but if you're only storing large media, you most likely won't see any difference except when copying/downloading to

Pros
  • GOLS certified
Cons
  • Nothing here
