I don't find them "compacting". The one I got works great but has no pain relieving properties that I can feel. Now I keep it in the car to wear on my arm on long drives to protect the arm closest to the window from the sun while driving. I won't be returning it because I think everyone is different and others may experience some pain relief. Also, I've found a new purpose for them that suits me. They appear to be of good quality.
