UPDATE IN 1 WEEK: Our cat couldn't scratch tape chairs. Although I didn't see him try, I can see small holes in the tape so I know he tried. Our cat has started scratching both corners/sides of our chairs. I cut off the excess threads as close to the fabric as possible and then applied the Smartykat tape. It was only one night and he didn't bother with the chairs at all. There was just enough tape on the roll to cover the sides of two chairs. It's definitely sticky enough to stay in place for a while, but I think this is an expensive solution as the tape picks up dust/fiber and hair very quickly. So I would consider using a roll of duct tape every week or two. I'll update once it's been a while.
