Inside the fill tube is a "flap" that must be held in place to allow the liquid to flow. The gas nozzle on the pump presses on the flap when it is inserted into the filler neck so that the gas flows. BUT. If you're trying to add something to the tank, you'll need to use one of these funnels, otherwise the liquid won't get into the tank. and you're a real mess. Most vehicles with capless filler necks are equipped with one of these funnels, but NOT all. I leave one in a zippered bag in the trunk of both cars.
