When I first saw a shark bite at my local hardware store I thought it would be *so* useful. if it works! I placed it next to a pump vibrating in a system of heated water and fluctuating pressure in a complex application. but also in a place where, if he had blown, he would not have flooded the house. At the time, I thought that simple installation was enough. but now, two pumps and six years later, I've been throwing sharks at plumbing problems everywhere because of the ease of disconnection and the brutal reliability of the connection! there, and the connection *works*. In places where lighting a torch and soldering is dangerous (like the basement under your house), a bite or two from a shark will also work, reducing the fear by a few orders of magnitude. In a conversation with my supplier of plumbing parts, I asked him. when "real plumbers" (I'm a do-it-yourself homeowner) use shark bites and he laughed. "Some people hate them because they're too easy," he said. I asked about reliability, and he told the story of his company: when they came out, everyone thought about the "too easyโ factor. So they built a tester with a pressure tank and some shark fittings, and then used their store-bought compressor to boost the pressure to about 120psi. For months they expected a pop or hiss, but the pressure remained stable. So the apparatus receded into the background of the camp for several years and was forgotten. and then finally the expected whistle sounded! They pulled out the apparatus, only to find the pressure vessel was rusted through and out of service. He warned that shark bites only fail when the inserted tube has a sharp edge and damages the O-ring. Therefore, be sure to eliminate any sharp points and bevel the end of the tube slightly before sliding. There's a cool little orange tool specifically for beveling and marking Pex for proper insertion: it's worth the price. You will also need a small orange latch that you can use to release the device to remove it from the tube.
