It has NO interface circuitry. You CANNOT connect it to your laptop's serial port. That being said, that was never the purpose of the cable, nor the purpose of those I'm comparing it to below. This cable is cheaper than a similar $17 cable and has Prime shipping, unlike the $7 cable. Unlike all the others, it even has a power switch to prevent connected devices from draining the car battery. I'm using this with an Arduino CAN bus shield and it works great. The connections are tight, the power button works, and there are even small thumbscrews if you want the serial port to be more firmly attached. Giving 1 star due to the very short description and lack of disclaimer is easy to mistake for a full fledged interface cable.
