A bit shy at first, doesn't seem to cut until you push down hard (there is a spring mechanism in the orange part). I assume it's a security feature or something; Really cool that there is less risk of accidentally cutting your finger. The plastic part of the ruler also seems to click into place. I didn't particularly like this feature as I mainly use it to cut USPS shipping labels. I found I had to grab the corner of the plastic thing and lift it up that way (I had a lot of trouble anyway). I'd rather it just lay flat and not bump into anything. Slows me down when I have to cut 4 times. It took me some time to understand, but the lines drawn on the surface are not really straight. Or they are not aligned with the knife. Whatever it is, you can't align the paper to the lines you drew without ruining the cut.
