I'm shoveling snow in northern Idaho in the winter and completely destroyed a pair of cheap shoe chains that have wire wrapped around rubber. Sometimes I cross slopes and do a lot of turns with the snow blower so the other couple actually got thrown off the rubber and then the loose wire ripped the rubber itself until so much rubber broke I had to hold on. them together with zippers. I decided enough was enough and bought them. They are much more durable and I get a MUCH better grip! The chain cover has some gaps so I sometimes slip a little when I'm pedaling a certain way, but there's enough grip that I always end up holding on to some traction, even if I slip a little at first. I wear these boots over winter boots so sizing was a concern for me but they fit great and keep me going all season. We'll see how they handle the salt, but even if I have to buy a new pair every season, they're affordable enough that it's still a good buy. UPDATE 2/10/19 - I've been using them for all the snow of the clearing season (last half of 2017/18 and first half of 2018/19) and they've just started to wear out so much the links are completely worn out and everything is falling off a part. I walk them on the sidewalk a lot, so it seems like pretty reasonable wear. Even if I have to buy a new set every year, it's still a great product and well worth the annual cost.
