I work at the local VSA (Animal Volunteer Service). I took a couple of kittens whose eyes were almost completely covered with a scab and their little noses were covered with crust and mucus. Pathetic side :(. I got all 4 of them to the vet quickly within 24 hours. Well after they said it was "feline herpes" (upper respiratory tract infection that doesn't go away but can be controlled) it cost me the most Almost $800 in the end !Including the cost of the vet, the cost of tests and the "wonderfully expensive" medication they gave me for each cat, it helped quite a bit but not much! They had liquid medication, medication that had to be injected in the eyes 4 times a day and some other antibiotics it was horrible and seriously it didn't help at all it reduced it a bit but they needed medication constantly I searched the internet for any information I could find and found out about LYSINE! I really thought it was a bunch of "bulls" but I was willing to try anything! First I bought a paste and a gel - cats hated it. Then I bought this powder. I mixed it in wet food (not too much or they'll taste it!) and they ate it! Liu I noticed that all of her symptoms really improved! I STOP taking meds from vets as the cost was killing me and not really helping them. ONE MONTH later, all cats are better, no sticky eyes, no crusted nose, no sneezing, EVERYTHING IS GONE! I was surprised! I have studied this more, the use of L-LYSINE and its effects. It suppresses what causes an outbreak of the herpes virus in the body, so taking it daily means you won't have an outbreak or full-blown symptoms! This works with humans too. I kept the kittens and gave them LYSINE forms for 2 years and they have had NO flare-ups since! If I had stopped it for a few months I would have noticed sneezing and dirt in her eyes for the first year and quickly got her back to it! With 5 cats (I had a 3 year old when I got her she caught herpes from them too!) It's quite difficult to ensure everyone gets 250-500mg of Ea. When they eat each other off the plate! So I just put one scoop in a 13 ounce jar of liquid nutrition, fed her three jars, and it all works great. I've tried TREATS most cats don't like them as well as many brands you have to give each cat like 10 treats 1-2 times a day! Wow! Or another brand, the treats were huge! Only 2 a day because they were the size of a golf ball! Rschunimagu. So LYSINE cat powder works well, its flavor blends well with food and is a good place to start. I've had no luck putting this on dry food, I've heard a lot of people do this, but my cats didn't eat the food and most of them just fell to the bottom of the plate/bowl. I also bought and used human grade 500 mg lysine tablets, crushed them with a spoon and mixed them into wet food. It's VERY inexpensive! It tastes stronger than that flavored powder, so use a good wet food mix and you won't have a problem. My cats got used to it quickly. You can also buy LYSINE powder loose here, it is suitable for humans and already finely ground. It works GREAT and costs MUCH less. I also like that it's a "human" class. Now I can go months without LYSINE and they still don't flare up. This lysine is sent from God! I recommend this powder for beginners, it is flavored and well accepted by cats. But in terms of cost, pills, pills, capsules at your store or here (cheaper!) are the strongest and best I've found (finely crushed). bitter, but I've heard that cats don't really "taste" bitter. Either the METHOD or the BRAND you choose will almost completely cure your cats of the virus without the huge vet bills and expensive medications that are useless. 5 cats have been taking lysine intermittently for 2 years and have NO MORE SYMPTOMS and are very happy about healthy spoiled kittens. Please do yourself, your wallet and your cats a favor and give them LYSINE 250mg per day OR - 500mg 1-2 times per day for flare-ups or to get started. Once the symptoms are gone, you can continue taking 250 mg per day to get rid of them for good! By the way, in order to multiply and cause BREAKDOWN, the herpes virus in humans and cats needs "ARGININE", another amino acid like LYSINE. When taken in higher doses, LISINE prevents excessive production of the amino acid ARGININE, thus preventing outbreaks of the herpes virus. So just check your pet's FOOD, TREATS, etc. for ARGININE ( L-ARGININE ) as it will make your problem worse! The ingredient list I found includes products, so just FYI, just to be on the safe side. Hope this helps someone with the problems I've encountered and learned along the way! :) Jens
