I bought this router because it was USB powered and dual band at the same time. Because it's USB powered, I need one less network adapter. I have been using the reliable and legacy 3COM travel router for many years. The main reasons for replacing 3COM are USB power delivery and 5GHz bandwidth. My biggest disappointment with the old 3COM was finding an available outlet for the power adapter near the nearest Ethernet jack and wiring. With USB ports becoming ubiquitous (especially with Anker's 4-port wall adapter), Belkin promises to solve this problem. As an added bonus, the Belkin is dual band. Since the Belkin is USB powered, it can be powered from any USB wall adapter, laptop connection, or even portable batteries. It draws around 400mA, so the 4000mAh USB portable battery lasts all day. For the test, I left the Belkin at home for a few weeks and used it instead of a regular hotspot. Belkin worked reliably and reliably with no issues. The range was good throughout the house. Because Belkin works in router mode, it creates a subnet and assigns IP addresses to connected clients (DHCP) - Simultaneous dual-band operation (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) with DD-WRT alone enables more operating modes. The setup interface is quite simple and after setting the WiFi access information (SSID, Channel, Password, DHCP subnet) it will connect every time. I use it with Apple devices (iPhone 5GHz), Dell laptops (both 2.4GHz and 5GHz) and Android (2.4GHz). Belkin can't quite keep up with my old 3COM travel router. The old 3Com has selectable modes: WiFi Bridge, Access Point (no DHCP), or Router (with DHCP). Belkin only works in router mode. As already mentioned, DD-WRT would be a great advantage. It would be very useful to have a USB powered dual band portable radio with the additional modes offered by DD-WRT.
