I live in an old historic apartment complex from the late 20's, I've had a hard time finding a drain plug that I thought would fit into the whole old bathroom would fit in our house so I tried it instead. It seems to work. It acts like a suction cup covering the drain in the tub and I haven't noticed any water leaking through the device. You just have to make sure you push it down fairly hard so the seal is tight. I've used it maybe 5-10 times and haven't had to clean it, no stains, mold or build up. I also like that I can hang it up in the shower when I'm not using it, the only downside is that the suction cup to hang it up isn't very strong.
