This extender connects to a Belkin Ethernet adapter, which in turn connects to a standard 12W Apple charger. I can confirm that the extension cord carries both power and data - the ethernet connection works with no issues. Using an adapter will erase my settings; Now I can hide the Ethernet adapter behind the monitor. If I don't get in touch, the power strip will still work!
