I'm a seamstress and I know my fabrics, it's not velvet, if it were there I'd have to take it to the cleaners. However, it is a very nice, washable plush velor, quite hard-wearing for a knit and well processed after checking the seams and elasticity. Looks great on my husband's chair and if it lasts over a year of daily use I would consider it very durable. Love it so much I just ordered another Zinfadel Red cover for our two seater. We have a skinny red leather two-seater, but it doesn't stand up to the onslaught of kids, cats, and dogs, and I hate the ugly protective cover I have to put on it. It's far better to have something nice that covers everything. For extra protection from sharp claws I can wear a thick coat underneath and at the same time it looks good. win/win
